The origins of the bouquet toss can be traced back to the middle ages in 14th century France. Europe was suffering in the midst of a devastating pandemic call the Black Death which is estimated to have killed 30-60% of the continent’s population. During this time of widespread panic, many myths evolved as people searched for ways to prevent, cure and deal with death on such a large scale. One such myth was that it was considered lucky to have a piece of a newly married brides gown. The believe not only led to the destruction of many wedding gowns, but also to bruised and battered brides caught up in the frenzy of guests clamoring for a piece of the prize. Looking to avoid the chaos, clever brides and grooms began throwing personal items such as the bouquet and the garter as a way to appease and distract their overzealous guests.
In modern times, the tradition has come under some scrutiny for several reasons. One consideration is that it unfairly subjects single women to unwanted attention. Savvy couples can overcome this objection by inviting all ladies, single or not, out to the floor for the bouquet toss. Another consideration is that it can dangerous, especially for younger girls and small children. In the rush to catch the bouquet, people sometimes get hurt. Just watch America’s Funniest Videos to see what occasionally goes wrong. Some couples will substitute the Anniversary Dance for the bouquet toss and give the bouquet to the couple that’s been married the longest. Other alternatives to the traditional bouquet toss include tossing rose petals, confetti sequins or ribbons, presenting portions of the bouquets to the bridesmaids or presenting it to a mother, mother-in-law or grandmother.
Despite it’s dubious origins and modern day concerns the bouquet toss is still one of the most popular wedding activities. Not much of a dancer? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn and you just needed a little push; something like a wedding. We’ve recommended these DVD and online dance lessons to our clients and they thank us almost every time. It’s not going to make you dance like Jason Derulo, Derek Hough or Beyonce, but it will give you the confidence to get out on the dance floor and string together easy and popular moves in any way you like. You’ll never have to say I don’t dance again.
