Weddings are filled with many traditional activities. The anniversary dance is often one the most inspirational moments of any wedding celebration. Most couples that choose to do an Anniversary Dance do it as a way to honor the institution of marriage and all of the married couples in attendance. (Modern weddings often celebrate all couples, married or not.)
Traditionally, the Master of Ceremony will call all of the couples out to dance. After a little bit of time (usually a 30 seconds to a minute or so) the MC will ask all couples who have been together less than (fill in the blank) years to take their seats. After another bit of time, the MC will ask all couples who have been together less than (fill in the blank) years to take their seats. The process continues, going up in increments of 5 or 10 years (using smaller increments as they go) until there is only one couple left on the dance floor. This is the couple that has been together the longest. At this point, there are a couple of different options. The bride and groom can present the couple with the bridal bouquet. This is a great option if you’re not going to do a bouquet toss. Another option is for the Master of Ceremony to ask the couple to give marriage advice to the newlyweds (i.e. How have you managed to have such a long and happy marriage?) Some couples will even choose to do both. In any case, it is a sweet, touching and inspirational way to celebrate the tradition of marriage.
Although it may not be an activity for every wedding reception, it is a classy way to pay homage for newlyweds to pay homage to all of the couples in attendance. Do you think the traditional Anniversary Dance is something you would like to have at your wedding? If you’d like to know how we turn this tradition on its head to get everyone out onto the dance floor and kick-start the party read our blog post.
Not much of a dancer? Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn and you just needed a little push; something like a wedding. We’ve recommended these DVD and online dance lessons to our clients and they thank us almost every time. It’s not going to make you dance like Jason Derulo, Derek Hough or Beyonce, but it will give you the confidence to get out on the dance floor and string together easy and popular moves in any way you like. You’ll never have to say I don’t dance again.
